Financial report for 2009

We learnt on Stewardship Sunday (24 January) that St Andrew's ran up a deficit of nearly £6,000 during 2009. Simon Peyton Jones, the church treasurer, has produced this report detailing our income and expenditure for the year. An accompanying letter from the vicar has been sent out to church members, inviting them to review their giving for the coming year and to return a response form. (Taxpayers can use the GiftAid declaration to ensure that tax can be reclaimed on their gifts).

The long & winding road: Lent 2010

The film Billy Elliot will be helping us at St Andrew's to think about the theme of vocation. This year's Lent course will use extracts from the film together with reflections on the Bible, discussion, prayer and a weekly journal. The title of the course is Life calling:seeking direction along the long and winding road. Groups will be held on Tuesday mornings, Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday evenings and Thursday afternoons. October edition of Chimes now available

The October edition of Chesterton Chimes is now available. This edition of the parish magazine looks forward to this year's Remembrance Day, and includes a write up from the Youth Choir holiday.

Follow up to Darwin evening

The St Andrew's book group will be discussing "Darwin and God" on 22nd September 2009 from 8pm. The book explores how Darwin's faith changed with his scientific thinking and as he battled with suffering. It also gives an insight into his search for Truth.

Did Darwin Kill God? (Wed 8th July, 8pm)

You're invited to an open meeting to consider some of the key questions arising out of Darwin's thinking. The event will take place in St Andrew's Hall on Wednesday, 8th July at 8pm.

Must we choose between faith and evolution?
Why is Darwin's theory generally accepted by scientists?
What about Adam and Eve and Genesis?
What impact does the theory have on faith?

There will be a panel discussion led by Dr Ard Louis and Dr Stephen Lloyd. Light refreshments will be provided.

Of camels and Kings

Many St Andrew's parishioners will remember Canon Graham Kings who was an Honorary Curate here between 1996 and 2000. One of the memorable highlights of that time was a camel ride from Oxford to Cambridge in aid of schools in Kenya. A recent YouTube posting (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYbC_MGt2Po) has a video reminder of that journey and more recent news of a Graham's new book being sold in aid of the same cause. Graham has now left St Mary's Islington, where he has been vicar for nine years, and will be consecrated as a bishop in Westminster Abbey on 24 June, becoming the new Bishop of Sherborne.

Cycle Ride in aid of Azul Wasi (Sunday 14th June)

A cycle ride in aid of Azul Wasi (the Blue House in Cusco, Peru) will take place on Sunday 14th June, leaving after church -- around 11.30am. The route is about 25 miles, with an optional shorter route of 20 miles. If you would like to take part, please sign up on the list at the back of the church or contact Mary Pountain (tel 311055, email mary.pountain@ntlworld.com).

If you don't want to ride, but would like to sponsor those of us who cycle, we will be very grateful. There is a sponsor sheet at the back of the church.

You can also sponsor online at www.justgiving.com/azulwasi. The charity L.A.F.F. (Latin American Foundation for the Future - (www.laffcharity.org.uk) are also supporting Azul Wasi. All the money raised by this online fundraising page will be sent to Azul Wasi as a donation from St Andrew's, to be used for the running costs there.

Prayer from Scratch - a three week course

Who is this for? Anyone who would like to explore the subject of prayer

Venue, dates and times: Room 3, St Andrew's Hall, on Wednesdays (June 10, 17, 24) from 7.45 - 9.15pm

Led by: Tricia Troughton and Eleanor Whalley

Each week there will be some opportunity to share our experience, consider a particular aspect of prayer and spend some time together in prayer.

Week 1 - Finding stillness in a busy world
Week 2 - Using the Scriptures imaginatively
Week 3 - Living prayer

A meditation on the Passion

There will be a special service for Palm Sunday evening (5 April, 6.30pm) with readings from Christina Rossetti and G A Studdert Kennedy ('Woodbine Willie') as well as from the bible (including the Passion reading); music (sung by New Voices) will include Pergolesi's Stabat Mater, Kenneth Leighton's Solus ad Victimam and Heinrich Schutz's Praise to thee, Lord Jesus.

Stewardship Sunday

Sunday 8 February is this year's Stewardship Sunday at St Andrew's. A summary of last year's finances is being sent to all church members. Overall, giving was up to nearly £71,000; total income was nearly £84,000, but expenditure was £500 more. Those who would like to give regularly by standing order can use this form (which also has GiftAid information).

Concert in aid of Camtrust (Wednesday, 12th November)

A concert given by Chesterton Community College musicians at St Andrew's Church on Wednesday, 12th November at 7.30pm. Chesterton Singers, conducted by Roger Bond, will provide a programme of different styles of songs, interspersed with items from some of their leading jazz musicians. No tickets, but a retiring collection will be taken for Camtrust, which provides educational opportunities for adults with disabilities (www.camtrust.co.uk)
